Cranial Prosthesis

A cranial prosthesis is a medical wig designed for those with hair loss due to conditions, trauma, or permanent loss. Each unit is custom-fitted to your scalp using secure methods like adhesives, clips, or combs.

Is a Cranial Prosthesis Covered by Insurance?

Often, yes. A cranial prosthesis is a medical device prescribed for hair loss caused by a medical condition — and unlike a fashion wig, it’s a covered benefit under many health plans, including most private insurance, Tricare, and some Medicare Advantage plans.

Here’s how we make it work for you:

  • We verify before you buy. We help you call your insurer and find out exactly what your plan covers before you spend a dollar.
  • The prescription matters. Your physician writes a prescription for a “cranial hair prosthesis” — not a “wig.” Insurance companies exclude wigs as cosmetic; cranial prostheses for medical hair loss are a different category.
  • We handle the paperwork. You’ll receive a Letter of Medical Necessity template for your doctor and an itemized superbill with our NPI and Tax ID for your claim.
  • HSA & FSA accepted. Health Spending Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts can be used toward your cranial prosthesis.

Coverage varies by plan — some cover a set amount, some a percentage, some require prior authorization. We’ll make sure you know before you commit.

Am I a Candidate for Insurance Coverage?

If your hair loss is caused by a medical condition, you may qualify. Common qualifying diagnoses we work with:

  • Scarring (cicatricial) alopecias — lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA), folliculitis decalvans
  • Alopecia areata, totalis, and universalis
  • Chemotherapy- and radiation-related hair loss
  • Medication-induced hair loss and telogen effluvium
  • Lupus, thyroid disorders, and other autoimmune conditions
  • Trichotillomania
  • Burn and traumatic scarring of the scalp

Cranial Prosthesis FAQs

Will insurance really pay for a cranial prosthesis?
Many plans do — it depends on your specific plan and diagnosis. We help you verify your benefits before you pay anything, and we provide the full claim package after delivery.
What’s the difference between a wig and a cranial prosthesis?
A cranial prosthesis is a medical-grade hair system prescribed for hair loss caused by a medical condition. It’s built for daily wear on a sensitive or scarred scalp, using medical-grade bases and secure application — and it’s the category insurance covers. A fashion wig is a cosmetic retail product, which insurance excludes.
Why can’t I just buy a wig online?
You can — but medical hair loss is different. Your scalp deserves medical-grade materials, your measurements deserve a custom-fitted base, and your insurance claim requires professional documentation (prescription, Letter of Medical Necessity, itemized superbill) that online retailers won’t provide.
Do I have to shave my remaining hair?
No. Our long-hair bonding method preserves the hair you have while restoring the areas you’ve lost.
How long does a custom cranial prosthesis take?
Typically 60–90 days from deposit to delivery, plus your fitting appointment.
What does a cranial prosthesis cost?
Every prosthesis is custom, so pricing depends on your specifications. Book a free consultation for an exact quote — plus we’ll help you find out what your insurance will reimburse before you commit.
